Mastering the Art of Communication and Personal Branding: Proven Tips from our Mentors
The YWLC Mentorship Programme 2023/2024 kicked off our first Mentors’ Masterclass on the 14 October 2023, with a focus on effective communications and personal branding. The panel featured Ms Maya Hari, CEO of Terrascope Pte Ltd, Ms Eu-Lin Fang, Partner, Sustainability & Climate Change Practice Leader at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and Ms Tanaaz Jimmy Irani, Managing Director, Citi Global Wealth-Asia Regional Risk & Control Head, Citibank. Moderated by our fellow YWLC member, Baey Yan Ling, this insightful session was anchored by the breadth, depth and diversity of the journeys made by our esteemed mentors. It was further accentuated with the perspectives on the intersection of sustainability, technology and the aspects surrounding it. A few takeaways are gleaned from insights shared by the panel.

Be authentic, communicate, don’t be afraid to give different views and bring solutions to table
Communication at its core should be authentically centered around the individual. This comes from the underlying perspective that people come from different places and roles, and therefore possess different communication styles. We play to our strengths by understanding how we build relationships in life, take the ideas we want to present and bring it to work life so the communication would be a natural extension of us.
Understand your personal strengths and weakness
The actions and conversations made in the workplace would subsequently form and shape how an individual is viewed. It is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the communication styles to build the trust and bond within the team. The context also matters and therefore understanding the issue and situation would give a better perspective on how to invest the time and effort into building a case to communicate, especially on tough topics, to colleagues.
Personal branding is a journey of finding what you are
Personal branding is a cumulation of issues and interests that matter to you the most. It is unique for each individual and shaped through experiences, self discovery, and developments as the individual navigates through the decisions made in life. The panel also shared their discovery journeys on interests and career transitions, where they relied on the multitude of resources available, engagement with people, and self assessment.
The session wrapped up with encouragement for the mentees to keep on learning, developing and networking.
